Public Relations Agency’s Quarterly Community Outreach Program Sees Employees Spend Quality Time with Seniors at Local Care Center
Los Gatos and San Francisco, Calif., June 20, 2008 — Sterling Communications Inc., an independent, full-service public relations agency, collectively donated more than 30 volunteer hours at community adult care facilities in Los Gatos and San Francisco as part of its ongoing commitment to corporate philanthropy. “At Sterling, we’re always looking for opportunities to get out into the community to interact and aid those who are less fortunate than ourselves,” said Marianne O’Connor, president and CEO of Sterling Communications. “We found these projects particularly rewarding because, unlike some of our past events, we got to see first-hand the benefits of our work—smiling faces and genuine appreciation of our company.”
In Los Gatos, Sterlingers visited Live Oak Adult Day Services to have lunch and share stories with local seniors. Live Oak, an adult day care center with five locations in the San Jose area, provides support to local senior citizens and their caregivers. In addition to participating in the center’s exercise hour and eating lunch with the residents, Sterling employees helped the group commemorate the anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake through trivia and games. “I found the day to be mutually rewarding,” said Matt Flynn, an account executive who participated in the Live Oak activities. “While you’re spending time lifting someone else up in some capacity, you’re also becoming more enthusiastic and deriving much more fulfillment from daily experiences. For me, helping those who are less fortunate than I in a physical or mental capacity amounts to a visceral experience, and it recharges my batteries just when I think they’re fully exhausted.” San Francisco Sterlingers donated their time at Laguna Honda Hospital & Rehabilitation Center’s Bingo Night, organized through Hands on Bay Area. Bingo Night takes place at Laguna Honda’s long-term care facility, which is home to residents who are isolated by severe physical and mental disabilities. During the event, Sterling employees kept Laguna Honda’s residents company as well as brought numerous items to donate as prizes. “Overall, the night was a wonderful opportunity to visit the residents, keep them company and cheer them on,” said Account Associate Marisa Peralta, who helped organize Sterling’s participation in Bingo Night. “It turned out to be a much more fulfilling and enjoyable experience than I think any of us anticipated. It was great getting to interact with the residents, see their smiles when they won and observe the joy that the prizes—which were really simple items—brought them. All of the Sterlingers agreed that is was an event we’d gladly participate in again.” Sterling Communications has a history of giving back to its local communities through its Giving Everyone A Reason (GEAR) to Help corporate philanthropy program. Recently, Sterling employees donated almost $1,600 to victims of the Myanmar (Burma) cyclone and China’s earthquake, as well as ongoing famine in Africa. Other activities have included “green” volunteer projects, sponsored food and clothing drives, monetary contributions to animal shelters and volunteer work in Bay Area food banks. In addition, for the second consecutive winter, Sterling assembled and donated much-needed hygiene kits to San Francisco-based Glide Health Services, an organization that provides shelter and health services for distressed families, women and children.
