LOS GATOS, Calif. Aug. 3, 2009 - Sterling Communications Inc., an independent, full-service, high-tech public relations agency, today announced the addition of Knome Inc. to its client portfolio of industry-leading technology companies. Knome, a personal genomics company, has sequenced the genome of more humans than any other company in the world.
A recognized pioneer in the burgeoning personal genomics field, Knome has turned to Sterling to create a communications strategy that will significantly enhance awareness with both consumers and the scientific research community. Overall, Knome aims to educate the public on the importance of expert interpretation in genomic sequencing. "As our services are becoming affordable to a much larger audience, we feel a responsibility to open conversations with multiple stakeholders around the positive impact consumer education and awareness of genetic information can have on health and well-being," said Jorge Conde, Knome's co-founder and CEO. "We were looking for a strategic communications partner with deep experience in developing nascent markets, and Sterling was an ideal fit. We believe the team's strategic counsel will not only enhance awareness of Knome, but also help accelerate the overall rate of innovation in personal genomics." Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.-and co-founded by George Church, Ph.D., professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School-Knome has the distinction of being the first company to offer complete genome (KnomeCOMPLETE) and comprehensive gene (KnomeSELECT) sequencing and analysis services to private individuals. "We're delighted to be assisting Knome in the march toward truly personalized medicine," said Marianne O'Connor, Sterling's president and CEO. "Boston is at the epicenter of genetic research and Knome is clearly a central player in this emerging market. The company has it all: the right vision and approach, an enviable pedigree and the unique ability to interpret sequenced DNA in ways that will benefit both individuals and society as a whole over time. This is every bit as exciting as the early days in the computer industry, and that's saying a lot." Sterling will service the Knome account out of its Silicon Valley headquarters.
