Types of opportunities

There are a lot out there! As we mentioned briefly in our introduction, here’s a sample of how organizations can be sorted. By:

• Category (literacy, sports, substance abuse, etc.)
• Level of training required
• One-off events vs. ongoing opportunities

If you don’t have a particular organization in mind, here are some great resources to help you to search for potential opportunities:

• Volunteer Match – Dedicated to helping everyone find a place to volunteer. More than 50,000 non-profit organizations listed.
• The Volunteer Center – Search for thousands of volunteer opportunities in San Francisco and San Mateo counties.
• California Volunteers (Office of the Governor) – Administers the AmeriCorps, Citizen Corps and Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning in the Golden State, developed and maintains the volunteer matching network.
• Seattle City Government – Includes city council and community opportunities.
• Taproot Foundation – Ensures all non-profits have the resources and infrastructure they need to operate through a service grant program to provide pro bono marketing, HR and IT consulting services.
• Peace Corps – An agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.
• International Volunteer Programs Association – An alliance of non-governmental organizations involved in international volunteer work and internship exchanges.
• United Nation Volunteers – Promotes and harnesses volunteerism for effective development.
• Greenpeace USA – An environmental activist group dedicated to saving the planet.
